Overview
At GD Goenka School, Bareilly, education extends beyond textbooks. We believe that students learn best when they are given opportunities to think, question, discuss, and lead. The Youth Parliament is one such initiative that brings classroom learning to life by introducing students to the working of India’s democratic system.
Organised in collaboration with Chhatra Sansad, the programme offers students a platform to experience parliamentary proceedings through structured debates, discussions, and policy-based deliberations. By participating in the Youth Parliament, students gain a practical understanding of the Constitution, governance, public administration, and the responsibilities of informed citizens.
The programme encourages students to express their ideas with confidence, respect different perspectives, and develop the qualities of responsible leadership that are essential in today’s world.
Programme Details
Orientation & Training
The Youth Parliament is a simulation of the Indian parliamentary system where students take on the roles of Members of Parliament and constitutional office bearers. They discuss contemporary national and social issues, debate proposed policies, and learn the importance of constructive dialogue and democratic decision-making.
Committee Meetings
Prior to the event, participants undergo orientation and training sessions to familiarise themselves with parliamentary procedures, rules of debate, research techniques, and effective public speaking. These sessions help students prepare thoroughly and participate with confidence.
Parliamentary Sessions
Throughout the programme, students engage in committee meetings, parliamentary debates, question hours, and legislative discussions. Every session is designed to strengthen analytical thinking, encourage teamwork, and improve communication skills while fostering awareness of civic responsibilities.
Democratic Decision Making
The Youth Parliament is not a competition alone; it is an educational experience that helps students become thoughtful individuals who understand the value of participation, accountability, and informed decision-making.
Roles and Responsibilities
Student Delegates
Student delegates represent Members of Parliament and actively participate in debates, discussions, and committee proceedings. They research assigned topics, present well-reasoned arguments, and contribute to meaningful policy discussions.
Speaker of the House
The Speaker conducts the proceedings of the House, maintains order, ensures that parliamentary rules are followed, and provides every participant with a fair opportunity to express their views
Prime Minister and Council of Ministers
Students assigned these roles present government policies, introduce legislative proposals, respond to questions raised by the House, and defend their decisions through informed discussion
Leader of Opposition
The Leader of the Opposition examines government proposals critically, presents alternative viewpoints, and promotes healthy democratic debate within the House.
Members of Parliament
Members actively participate in discussions, raise public concerns, question policies, and contribute towards balanced and constructive deliberations.
Organising Committee
The organising committee coordinates registrations, scheduling, logistics, documentation, and event management to ensure the smooth conduct of the Youth Parliament.
Faculty Mentors
Teachers guide students throughout the preparation process by helping them understand parliamentary procedures, strengthen their research, improve public speaking skills, and develop confidence while encouraging independent thinking.
Learning Outcomes
Participation in the Youth Parliament helps students develop effective communication skills, leadership qualities, critical thinking, research abilities, teamwork, and confidence in public speaking. More importantly, it nurtures respect for democratic values, responsible citizenship, and informed decision-making
